The largest and most
visible unit of the police department is the Uniformed Patrol Section;
consisting of 55 officers who are responsible for patrolling the campus
and responding to all calls for police assistance 24-hours a day every
day. The Uniformed Patrol, supervised by Deputy Director Eric M. Grabski,
provides the traditional police services such as vehicle, bicycle and
foot patrol, responds to criminal incidents, burglar/fire alarms, and
all types of emergencies and calls for service.
Bicycle
Patrol Unit
The
Bike Patrol Unit (BPU) maintained a full and successful schedule in
2000. The BPU ceased to function as a separate unit but still functioned
by officers from each shift participating in Bike Patrol activities. The
members of the BPU continued to focus on developing positive police
community relations. The members of the BPU initiated daily
conversations with students, faculty and staff, responded to calls for
assistance and deterred crime.
The City of Columbia had the opportunity to host the 2000 US Olympic
Women’s Marathon Trials in February of 2000. The BPU had the pleasure of
representing USC by providing security for the lead runners throughout
the race.
Members of the BPU assisted the Special Olympics during the fall of
2000. The BPU, along with bike officers from other agencies, provided
escort for the torch runner. Members of the BPU conducted a Police
Mountain Bike Familiarization Class for the Lexington County Sheriff’s
Department in November of 2000.
The BPU in January
assisted Lexington Police Department with the Souper Bowl 10 K run in
Lexington, S. C. by providing escort for the runners. The BPU also
assisted with the move in day at the University. They provided a mobile
source of security and assistance during such a high traffic volume day.
The Division hosted a LEBA certified Basic Police Mountain Bicycle Class
in November of 2004. Lt. Broadus, Sgt. Gooding and Cpl. Sonnefeld were
the instructors for the class.
Members of the BPU were also requested to monitor events both in the
city and at USC that normally produce congested traffic situations and
large crowds. BPU members rode Approximately 1800 total miles in 2000.
Parking
Enforcement
The Parking
Enforcement Section, led by Lt. Allen Broadus, consists of nine
parking enforcement officers.
Parking Enforcement enforces the parking regulations on campus, assists
with special event parking, maintains parking meters and gates, and
helps guide visitors on campus.
