About this Fellowship
Promotes the benefits of a master's degree within industry. GEM Fellows are provided engineering summer work experiences through an employer sponsor and a portable academic year fellowship of tuition, fees, and a stipend which may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted.
GEM offers MS and Ph.D. level students an outstanding opportunity and access to dozens of the top Engineering and Science firms and Universities in the nation. The GEM Fellowship was designed to focus on promoting opportunities for individuals to enter industry at the graduate level in areas such as research and development, product development, and other high level technical careers. GEM also offers exposure opportunities to a number of opportunities in academia.
Eligibility
Must be a senior, or graduate of an accredited engineering or computer science program at the time of application.
Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale (or a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for PhD programs).
Must contractually agree to intern for two summers with sponsoring GEM Employer, beginning the summer after sponsorship. (For PhD programs, students must contractually agree to intern with a GEM Employer member the Summer immediately after sponsorship.)
GRE: Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the GRE to qualify for multiple GEM Member University programs. Applicants will be asked to provide test dates and/or GRE scores when available.
University Graduate Program: Applicants must directly apply to a minimum of three (3) GEM Member Universities STEM graduate departments. The deadline to apply to three GEM Member Universities is January 15th OR the relevant STEM graduate department deadline, whichever is earlier. Applicants must be admitted into a GEM Member University graduate program with confirmed department funding support before the GEM Fellowship is awarded.
Award Value
Tuition, fees, and $16,000 stipend for Full Fellows. Includes summer internship with industry sponsor. Application fees for member universities can be waived, and reimbursement for GRE test is possible.

Department of Defense National Defense Science and Engineering Grad Fellowships
Highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported STEM disciplines. Three years of support, including full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend ($40,800 annually), and up to $1400 in medical insurance.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
Awards for study and research in the sciences or in engineering leading to master's or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of sciences. Three-year annual stipend of $37,000, plus $16,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, for students pursuing graduate education. Usable over 5 years.
