Speaking Down Barriers

We are a team of listeners, healers, artists, researchers, teachers, theologians, & creatives who work together to offer encounters that transform our life together across human difference.  Using spoken word poetry, transformative dialogue, workshops, and deep listening as tools, we are working with people, communities, organizations, & institutions to build an equitable world through healing & justice. Rather than our human differences of race, class, sexual orientation, gender, national identity, and religion act as sources of division, they can be the source of our collective strength.

Race to the Table SC

Race to the Table SC seeks to peacefully dissolve the racial barriers in society and between individuals. In racially mixed small groups, the dialogue experiences go beyond superficial conversations and create an openness to re-evaluate viewpoints and personal assumptions. Built into the process are ways to be “change agents” and continue building understanding and friendships with not only those met at a Race to the Table SC event, but with others of diverse racial and cultural identities.

Enough Pie

The mission of Enough Pie is to use creativity to connect & empower our community in Charleston’s Upper Peninsula.

Social Justice Racial Equity Collaborative

We recognize the urgent need for systemic change around racial justice in Charleston. We are cognizant of the widely shared feeling that conversation is not enough. In creating the Social Justice Racial Equity Collaborative: Transforming from the Inside Out, The Sophia Institute seeks to convene and align respective goals, resources, and audiences to maximize collective impact for Social Justice and Racial Equity.

The Race and Social Justice Initiative

The mission of the Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) at the College of Charleston is to promote public awareness and dialogue about race and social justice issues in the Charleston area, the state of South Carolina, and beyond, through a collaborative effort led by the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, Addlestone Library, the African American Studies Program, the Lowcountry Digital History Initiative (LDHI), and multiple community partners.
