The School of Information Science offers a variety of continuing education opportunities, ranging from one-day workshops to extended online courses. We work with practitioners to broaden knowledge and enhance the skills that improve services and advance careers. Check this page for upcoming programs and courses.

Certificate in Library Studies

The Certificate in Library Studies is a non-credit professional development certificate offered by the iSchool at the University of South Carolina. The six-month program is designed to provide public library staff with a foundational understanding of important ideas and values of the profession.

Topics include:

  • Advocacy
  • Programming
  • Professional Ethics
  • Social Engagement
  • Cultural Competence
  • Information Seeking Behavior
  • Principles of Collection Management


  • Online, asynchronous -paced for full-time staff
  • Specific learning objectives
  • Monthly live meetings
  • Participants move through the course together, as a group
  • Guest speakers include iSchool faculty discussing their areas of expertise
  • Module quizzes monitor engagement and learning
  • 12 Continuing Education Units
