- Bachelor’s degree or higher;
- Initial, Professional, or Alternative Route certificate at the early childhood, elementary, middle, secondary, or PK–12 level;
Add-on certification is determined and granted by the South Carolina Department of Education. Prior to beginning coursework, it is recommended that teachers contact the South Carolina Department of Education to determine steps to add-on certification areas. Refer to the South Carolina Department of Education’s website and the South Carolina Guidelines and Requirements for Adding Certification Fields and Endorsements for the most current add-on requirements as they are subject to change. Once coursework has been completed, SC educators should submit a request through the SC Educator Portal to add the new certification area to their certificate. After submitting the request in the SC Educator Portal, educators will need to submit their USC transcript to the SCDE.
